Shanghai
Cemetery & Shangai Memorial Cemetery
Pipestone Twp
Located on section 18, on both
sides of Park Road, one- quarter mile north of Shanghai Road, Eau
Claire
History and Information:
The original Shanghai Cemetery is on the West Side of the road . The Settlers Memorial rock (photo below) is a dedication to the early settlers with dates of 1837 to 1937. Thank goodness for the DAR that did a reading in the early part of the 20th century before many of the stones weathered away. In some obituaries and death certificates this cemetery is noted as Pipestone Cemetery #1.Shanghai Memorial Cemetery, Township owned. This new portion, is on the East side of the same road. This is an active Cemetery. Although the cemetery was established in 1957, the News Palladium of Benton Harbor on September 9, 1961 page 11, col. 1, states: "Cemetery Is Opened" and that lots may be purchased by contacting Ward Collins of Sodus who is serving as sexton. A nice sized circle drive was part of the design of the cemetery and lots could be purchased for $30 for the inside circle of that drive. It was stipulated that the grave markers would be flush grave stones in the circle area. The original 3 acre plot was purchased from Reinhold Priche in 1957 and another 3 ½ acres purchased from his estate in about 1975.
Another public memorial is an ornately carved rock that states: "In memory of Twenty Seven Soldiers of the Civil War who sleep in this cemetery. This monument was restored by the Ferguson Memorials Works and rededicated in August of 1961. Noteworthy, is the Cavalry man's hat carved and resting at the top of the memorial.

please email me at berrienmigenweb@yahoo.com with the information. Type in the subject line,
Shanghai Cemetery and in the body add the information you are submitting.Other possible research sources and publications see our main cemetery list.Local lore states that the area was named because Dr. Enos had brought some "Shanghai eggs" and in the chickens raised from those eggs, the village should be called Shanghai. (Per the history of Berrien and Van Buren Counties, Michigan) Dr. Enos died in 1868.
