Jackson, John Charles
John Charles Jackson (1859-1925) (Photo), lived with his family in Benton Harbor from the mid 1870's to some time in the 1880's.
He was the elder brother to Michael Timothy Jackson, who is buried at Crystal Springs Cemetery. Their parents were John C. and Anastacia Jackson, who lived in Benton Harbor between the mid 1870's to the mid-1890's, and are buried at Resurrection Cemetery, St. Joseph Twp. (Tombstone photo).
John Charles Jackson was censused as a sailor in 1880, and shortly after that, moved East to Maryland and then to the Hudson Valley of New York State, to the city of Newburgh, where he raised a large family. A mystery remains re: why he left Michigan. Was it a young man's wanderlust, or did he have a falling out with the family?

Jackson, John C.
He was born in Chester County, PA in about 1815, the son of a Thomas Jackson who was born in Charlotte County, Nova Scotia/New Brunswick. (Thomas was a son of Quaker parents from London Grove Township who moved to Canada briefly in 1785-1788). Little is known of John C.'s early life and travels until his arrival in Lake County IL and marriage there in 1855 to a widow named Anastacia Redmond Nolan. (His eldest son from this marriage was John Charles Jackson, also previously listed here.). In the early 1870's, John C. and his family moved across Lake Michigan to Benton Harbor, where some of his wife's Yore family in-laws had previously settled. He became a small-acreage fruit grower, passed away in 1896 and is interred with his wife at Resurrection Cemetery in St. Joseph. Although his son John Charles had gone east to Newburgh NY in the 1880's, his son Michael Timothy Jackson remained in Benton Harbor and Berrien County, married a Julia Ryder, and raised two sons here. Michael is interred at Crystal Springs Cemetery with other members of his immediate family.
